In a routine eye examination the vision and the eye pressure is routinely checked for all patients.
If there is a history of systemic diseases like diabetes, hypertension etc then a detailed evaluation of the retina is done as well.
Children should undergo routine examination at the age of 3 years and then at 5 years to rule out refractive errors as if untreated then it can cause lazy eyes or amblyopia in children which needs to be treated as soon as possible. Children should undergo routine eye examinations every year especially if they have dimness of vision, headache or eye pain. If squint is also present then a detailed evaluation is required at the earliest or else lazy eye or amblyopia might occur
A detailed retinal evaluation after dilation is required for all myopes once a year as they have higher risk of developing retinal holes or degeneration.
