Refractive surgery includes Lasik Refractive surgery (LASIK/SMILE/ICL)

Refractive surgeries include PRK/LASIK/FEMTO LASIK in which the surface of the cornea is reshaped to allow the patient to see without glasses or reduce the dependence on glasses. In ICL we place a customised foldable lens inside the eye in front of the natural clear lens .

What is LASIK ?

Laser Assisted in situ Keratomileusis – laser is used to reshape the cornea to decrease your dependence on glasses. In myopia or near sightedness it flattens the cornea and in hypermetropia or far sightedness it steepens the cornea.

In normal LASIK surgeries a specialised microkeratome or and oscillating blade is used to create a flap of the cornea on the bed laser is done to reshape the cornea and then the flap is put back in place

What is i-LASIK ?

Its  a new technology where NO BLADE is used. it uses IntraLase TM a specialised femtosecond laser for creating the corneal flap which is folded and excimer laser is then used to reshape and correct the refractive error.

As no blade touches your eye the safety of the LASIK procedure increases considerably.

What is PRK ?

Patients with thin corneas or those who want to join professions in which there can be a chance of close contact those are the patients in which PRK is advised. In this procedure the top most layer the epithelium which is like the skin of the cornea is removed and the laser is done to reshape the cornea, so no flap is created. The patients may need more time to recover around 4-5 days and the vision also takes some time to stabilize. A little pain and blurriness after this surgery is expected.

What is ICL?

Implantable Collamer Lens is another refractive surgery in which a customised lens is placed inside the eye in front of the natural lens so that the lens focusses on the retina. This is usually done for patients who are not eligible for LASIK (thin corneas, keratoconus, higher refractive error). Usually ICL is done one eye at a time and we wait for 2-3 days before doing the other eye unlike LASIK or PRK which is done in both the eyes at the same time.

When do I stop wearing my contact lenses before surgery?

Contact lens can cause some change in the shape of your cornea so before the LASIK check up which tells us if you are a fit for the surgery  it is advisable to stop wearing contact lens and let your cornea recover to it natural shape. Soft contact lens should be discontinued 1 week and RGP lenses should be discontinued 6 weeks before check up.

When do I go back to work after LASIK/ PRK/ ICL surgery ?

The day of surgery you might have some discomfort so we usually ask to day that day leave. You might go back to work the next day after your post op check up. PRK usually we recommend 4-5 days of rest. There might be some restrictions for the first week like no head bath and no strenuous exercises. Swimming and contact sports are restricted for 2-3 months after surgery. Wearing make up is restricted for a month after surgery.
