It’s a myth.

The only treatment for cataracts is surgery and replacing the cataractous lens with an artificially clear lens. And it’s very safe, effective and advanced.

When you notice blurred vision, glare, haloes, or are sensitive to light, a thorough evaluation of the eye is done, and your best-corrected image is obtained with glass.

Today, we lead a more digitally and socially active life. So, the right time to do cataract surgery would be when you start facing difficulties in day-to-day activities like reading, driving, working on your computer, or even watching television. It is a day-care surgery and usually takes 10–15 minutes, but you might need to be in the center for a couple of hours for the procedure. It is safe, incredibly advanced, and can be operated in any season.

If you don’t treat your cataract, then in some cases, it might not progress, but in most cases, it can become premature, in which case there are a lot of complications associated with it, along with lens-induced glaucoma. So, operating the cataract at the right time is better for better outcomes and an earlier visual recovery.

If you have other medical problems like diabetes or hypertension, then we need to bring them under accepted limits to undergo the cataract surgery procedure safely.

Usually, cataract surgery uses anesthetic drops, which numb your eye, and you have minimal discomfort during surgery.

It is the most successful and safest surgery. The incisions are 1.8 to 2.8mm, depending on the intraocular lens chosen. The cataractous lens is in a bag, an open, thin membrane. The cataract is broken into small pieces using phacoemulsification, i.e., ultrasound at a very high speed, roughly 40,000 times per second, which is sucked out. The foldable IOL is placed in the bag, unfolding inside it and regaining its original size.

Most of the patients get good vision after cataract surgery. Even after a perfect surgery, no one can guarantee an excellent idea, as the invention regained depends on the retina, cornea, and optic nerve condition.
